HOUSTON: Protest Against Coup gets support from San Antonio & El Paso

Against the military coup, Popular Resistance!

More than 40 people braved the heat and many drove long distances to hold a demonstration in opposition to the military coup in Honduras, the subsequent violantions of human rights, repression of media outlets in Honduras and demanding a return of the democratically elected Manuel Zelaya to office as president of Honduras.

People held signs and banners condemning the coup, and speakers spoke their piece from the Centro de los Trabajadores Agrícolas Fronterizos of El Paso, The Southwest Workers Center of San Antonio and Rio Grande Valley, The Central American Resource Center of Houston, Students for a Democratic Society of Houston and many other groups and individuals.

(Honduras is not a barracks, the military get out!) “No al golpe militar, resistence popular” (no to the military coup, popular resistance) and other slogans made up on the spot.

The rally lasted from around 1:30 till almost 3. The protest was covered by News 2 Houston (NBC), Telemundo, El Dia, and the Daily Cougar.

While we hope that Manuel Zelaya will be swiftly reinstated, ending the crisis in Honduras, we are watching the situation and may call for protests again in the near future.

Press Conference Condemning the military coup d’état in Honduras

June 28, 2009
3445 W. 26st
3:00 PM

La Voz de los de Abajo in Chicago condemns the military coup d’état in Honduras that took place early this morning, Sunday June 28 against President Manuel Zelaya Rosales and against the Honduran people.

This act is a desperate reaction of the right and its allies to stop the popular choice to seek democratic paths for national transformation.

The reactionary right has been vehemently trying to stop the Encuesta Nacional that was to take place this day, June 28, where the Honduran people where to vote whether or not a fourth ballot should be added asking for a referendum. The planned referendum was to ask the population if they approved of a formal vote next November on whether to rewrite the Honduran constitution.

The military coup d’état was planned and executed in an articulate manner by the National Congress, the media and its owners; the Public Ministry, the most powerful entrepreneurs of the country and the Armed Forces, that have been disrespectful to the decisions of the executive powers; that is why we condemn that the Army has taken up a role similar to that of the eighties, when it serve as a vehicle of instability and repression.

We are greatly concerned of what’s currently happening in the Peasant and Indigenous communities in Honduras. As of now, we know that there is no electricity, no communication via radio and television and various community elected representatives have been harassed. In addition, orders of arrest have been fabricated against peasant and indigenous leaders that are fighting for a better country with justice and equality.

We ask the international communities to manifest and protest against the aggression to the Honduran people and to express their solidarity and support for the protection of human rights of our Honduran brothers and sisters.

We ask to intensify the organized struggle to reinstate the National Popular and Democratic Constituent Assembly, today, in this historic moment of our country.
We stand with the popular movement in Honduras; with the campesinos, street vendors, teachers, students, and workers and their organizations struggling for political, social and economic justice.
